Concrete floor polishing isn't a coating. We grind the slab with progressively finer diamond tooling, apply a chemical densifier that hardens the surface, then keep refining until it reaches the sheen you want, from a soft matte to a high gloss. A stain guard can be added for extra protection against spills.
Because there's no film on top, there's nothing to peel or delaminate. Polished concrete suits large interior spaces with steady traffic. If you need chemical resistance, bright colors, or a floor over damaged or very damp concrete, a coating is usually the better choice; see coatings vs. sealers and our commercial epoxy flooring.

Clean, reflective floors that brighten a space and are easy to maintain.

When a slab is damaged or needs chemical resistance, a coating may fit better.
Flake floors →| Choice | Options |
|---|---|
| Sheen | Matte, satin, semi-gloss, high gloss |
| Aggregate exposure | Cream (little stone showing), salt and pepper, or exposed aggregate |
| Color | Natural gray, or dyes applied during polishing |
Higher gloss and more aggregate exposure take more grinding steps, which affects cost and time.
Polished concrete is generally not slippery when clean and dry, but any smooth floor can be slick when wet or dusty. Mats at entries and regular dust mopping help.
Dust mop daily in busy spaces, clean with a neutral pH cleaner, and wipe up acidic spills quickly. Polished floors can be refreshed by re-burnishing rather than recoating.
National 2026 ranges for polished concrete run roughly $3–$12 per square foot, with matte finishes at the lower end and high gloss or exposed aggregate at the upper end. Large open spaces cost less per square foot than small rooms. Your quote follows a site visit.

It's concrete that's been ground with progressively finer diamond tooling and treated with a densifier to create a hard, smooth, glossy surface. There's no coating on top.
It depends on the space. Polished concrete is low-maintenance and won't peel, while epoxy offers more color options and better chemical resistance, and can hide slab damage.
Many can, but heavily cracked, patched or very damp slabs may not polish well. We evaluate the slab before recommending polishing.
