Auto Shop Floors

Floors for Working Bays

A service bay floor takes oil, coolant, brake fluid, solvents, hot tires off the highway, rolling jacks and dropped tools, then gets hosed down. Bare concrete soaks all of it up. An auto shop epoxy floor keeps spills on the surface, cuts dust on freshly detailed vehicles and brightens the bay so techs can spot leaks and dropped parts.

Our typical shop system: diamond grinding (oil-soaked slabs need real prep), crack repair, a thick 100%-solids epoxy base, epoxy novolac in bays that see brake fluid or solvents, and a slip-resistant topcoat. See why hot tires peel thin coatings.

Actual resistance depends on product, thickness, cure and how long a chemical sits. Clean spills promptly.

Slip resistance and OSHA

OSHA 1910.22 requires walking-working surfaces to be kept clean and, as far as possible, dry. We broadcast aggregate into the topcoat: heavier in wash bays and walkways, lighter where techs roll creepers and clean often.

Keeping bays open

Phase the work so half the bays keep running, schedule over weekends, and use polyaspartic topcoats where they fit (vehicles typically in about 24–48 hours versus about 72 for epoxy, depending on product and conditions).

Cost and upkeep

As a reference, 2026 Sarasota-market pricing for commercial floors over 1,000 sq ft runs about $6.50–$9 per square foot; moisture mitigation adds about $1.25–$1.75 per sq ft and cove base about $4 per linear foot. Plan to reseal high-traffic bays periodically.

Good To Know

Auto Shop Epoxy Flooring FAQs

What is the best floor coating for a mechanic shop? +

A diamond-ground slab with a thick 100%-solids epoxy base and a slip-resistant, chemical-resistant topcoat. Bays that see brake fluid, solvents or battery acid benefit from epoxy novolac.

Will brake fluid damage an epoxy floor? +

Brake fluid is hard on standard epoxy and can soften or stain it. Epoxy novolac offers much higher resistance, and spills should be cleaned promptly either way.

How long does a shop have to close? +

Many shops phase the work bay by bay or over a weekend. Polyaspartic topcoats typically allow vehicles back in about 24 to 48 hours; traditional epoxy about 72 hours.

Is an epoxy shop floor slippery when wet? +

A smooth glossy coating can be. Broadcast aggregate in the topcoat adds traction, tuned for wash bays, walkways and work areas.
